What is MP4 to MP3 Conversion?
MP4 is a container format that can hold both a video track and an audio track together in one file. MP3 is an audio-only format. "Converting" MP4 to MP3 doesn't turn video into sound — it discards the video track entirely and re-encodes the existing audio track into the MP3 codec, producing a much smaller file that contains only what you could already hear.
This is useful any time the audio is what actually matters: pulling a song out of a music video, getting the audio from a recorded lecture or meeting so you can listen without the video file's size, or extracting a voice memo that was accidentally recorded as a video clip.
How to Convert MP4 to MP3
- 1
Upload your video file
Drag and drop a video file onto the upload area, or click to browse and select one from your device. The file loads directly in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere yet.
- 2
Choose your audio quality
Pick Low (128 kbps), Medium (192 kbps), or High (320 kbps) depending on whether you care more about a small file or the best possible audio fidelity.
- 3
Convert to MP3
Click "Convert to MP3." Conversion runs entirely in your browser using FFmpeg.wasm, so larger files take a bit longer depending on your device.
- 4
Preview the result
Once conversion finishes, an audio player appears so you can listen to the converted MP3 before downloading it.
- 5
Download your MP3
Click "Download MP3" to save the file to your device, named after your original video file with a .mp3 extension.
Choosing the Right Bitrate
MP3 bitrate controls the tradeoff between file size and audio quality. Higher bitrates sound better but produce larger files:
- 128 kbps (Low): Smallest file size. Fine for spoken-word content like podcasts, lectures, and meeting recordings where music-grade fidelity doesn't matter.
- 192 kbps (Medium): The most common general-purpose choice — a good balance of quality and size for most music and mixed content. This is the default.
- 320 kbps (High): The highest standard MP3 bitrate, close to CD-quality for most listeners. Best when you care about audio fidelity, at the cost of a larger file.
